Why you still need an interior designer in an AI world

What a person can give your home that a prompt never will

Type "calm coastal living room with timber and linen" into an AI image tool and, within seconds, you'll have a beautiful picture. Soft light, a perfectly styled sofa, a sculptural vase on a travertine coffee table. It's impressive, and we'll admit it: we use these tools too.

But a picture of a room isn't a home.

A home is where you wake up, cook dinner, argue about the air-con, and watch your children grow. It has to work on a busy Tuesday morning as well as it photographs on a Sunday afternoon. That gap between an image and a lived-in, loved home is exactly where an interior designer earns their place. Here's what we bring that AI can't.

1. AI knows what's popular. We get to know you.

AI learns from millions of images, so it's very good at giving you the average of what everyone else likes. That's why so many AI-generated rooms look beautiful but strangely familiar.

Our process starts with you, not the algorithm. Before we choose a single finish, we want to know how your household really lives. Who's first up in the morning? Where do the school bags land? Do you entertain on the deck every weekend, or curl up with a book by the window? Is there a sideboard from your grandmother that has to find the perfect spot?

These aren't details you'd think to put in a prompt. They come out in conversation, and they're what make a home feel like it could only ever belong to you.

2. A home is felt, not just seen

AI designs for the screen. We design for all of your senses.

We stand in your space. We notice where the afternoon sun falls, how the room sounds when it's full of people, and the view you see first when you walk through the front door. We know how travertine feels cool underfoot in summer, how linen relaxes over time, and how a brushed nickel tap will age compared with aged bronze.

The light in the Sutherland Shire isn't the light on the Sunshine Coast, and neither is the humidity. Choosing materials that look as good in year ten as they do on day one takes knowledge you can only build by touching, testing and living with them.

3. A beautiful image doesn't come with a floor plan

That AI-generated kitchen might look stunning, but does the island leave enough room to open the dishwasher? Will that sofa fit through your hallway? Is there anywhere to put the bins?

Good design is built on measurements, clearances, circulation, lighting plans and joinery details that actually work. When there's a renovation or new build involved, we work alongside your builder or architect so that what's drawn can be built, on budget, and to the standard you expect. A rendered image can't do that. It can't even tell you whether the room it imagined could exist.

4. Real products, real budgets, real lead times

Look closely at an AI-generated room and you'll often find furniture that doesn't exist, lighting that couldn't be wired, and a rug in a size nobody makes.

We source real pieces from suppliers and makers we trust, many of them Australian. We know which fabrics stand up to children and pets, which stone needs sealing, and what's on a twelve-week lead time when your move-in date is in ten. We work to your budget from day one, and we know where it's worth investing and where a clever, affordable alternative will do the job beautifully.

5. The art of editing

Anyone can add more. The real skill in interior design is knowing what to leave out.

Restraint, proportion, the balance between bold and quiet, and the confidence to break a "rule" when it makes a room sing: that's judgement built over years and hundreds of real spaces. It's the difference between a room that follows a trend and one that feels timeless.

6. Someone in your corner

Designing a home involves hundreds of decisions, and it can be exhausting. A designer guides you through them, narrows the options and makes sure every choice adds up to a cohesive whole.

When a delivery arrives damaged, a tile is discontinued or a measurement on site doesn't match the plan, you need a person who can solve it, not a chatbot that offers another picture. We coordinate trades, manage the details and take responsibility for the result, right through to the final cushion on installation day.

So where does AI fit?

We're not anti-technology. AI and 3D tools help us explore ideas quickly, show you concepts sooner and bring your design to life through renders and walkthroughs before anything is ordered. Used well, they make our process faster and more visual.

But they're tools, in the same way a tape measure is a tool. The vision, the judgement, the relationships and the care still come from people.

Interiors with intention

At Savannah, every space we create starts with a conversation and ends with a home that's functional, beautiful and, most importantly, individually tailored to you. That's something no algorithm can give you.
